PASA Scholarship Requirements

There may be available per year a scholarship of up to $1,000, to be awarded to High School graduate(s) entering college. If there are no applicants the amount will stay in the Scholarship Fund.

The applicant may be interviewed by the scholarship selection committee. The scholarship committee reserves the right to select the scholarship recipient based on highest academic achievement and citizenship. The scholarship money will be disbursed to applicant, if awarded the scholarship, within a month after receiving the award, via check in the name of the recipient and college.

1. The applicant must be a legal child or grandchild of Portuguese descent who is a paid PASA member, in good standing, for at least the past two full consecutive calendar years.

2. Applicant must be an accepted student to an accredited College or University.

3. Applicant must carry a minimum 3.0 GPA at time of application submittal. For high school students, SAT scores may be taken into consideration in the case of a tie.

4. Applicant must perform 20 hours of service to the Portuguese American Suncoast Association, which shall be completed during high school years and prior to submitting application. The following services will be considered to meet this requirement: participation in folk group performances, participation in Youth Group presentations, helping to clean the club, doing dishes on Saturday night dinners, helping with decorating and/or set up for dinner dances, participation other PASA led activities. Sheet is to be signed by PASA officer and/or director and submitted with application.

5. Scholarship applications and materials shall be postmarked by April 30th and award presented at the yearly “Day in Portugal” celebration the following June.

6. Application form must be completed in print, signed and dated by applicant, and signed and dated by parent or guardian. All documents shall be attached to the application and mailed in one package to the Scholarship director of the Portuguese American Suncoast Association at the address below. Applications without complete documents will be disqualified. Questions can be addressed to the scholarship director, by mail, by phone, or by e-mail. It is the responsibility of the applicant to provide all required information and to confirm with the scholarship director that all the information has been received.

7. Required documents to submit:

A record of your high school grades (11th & 12th) signed by principal or counselor;

A copy of your Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores;

bullet

A copy of letter of acceptance from the college or university you are attending;

bullet

Two letters of recommendation from teachers, principals, counselors, coaches, or ministers who are not related to you. These letters should address your character, citizenship, ability and academic promise and achievements.

You may include copies of any other academic awards, honors or test scores, which may reflect favorably on your application.
